Have to repaint the front fender Empty
PostSubject: Have to repaint the front fender   Have to repaint the front fender EmptyJune 26th 2017, 5:47 pm

Today while tightening the strut nuts I was leaning on the body apparently too hard. The paint on the front passenger fender peeled off in 6" strips over the headlight. It is about 6"X8" down to the primer. Most have been defective all along. I have never had body paint peel off in strips like this. I don't want to say luckily, but luckily my son just finished his year of vocational school in the collision shop. I will buy the paint and a gun and he will blend it in.

I'm happy with a stock truck, I put OEM shocks and struts back on it.

PostSubject: Re: Have to repaint the front fender   Have to repaint the front fender EmptyJuly 6th 2017, 8:16 pm

Today, from the advice from an auto body shop I took my truck to the Chevy dealer where I purchased it. I made the appointment last week and made sure to tell them how old the truck was knowing the 5 year warranty on paint had expired. They said to bring it in. The service rep doesn't even want to look at it out of warranty. He doesn't know the number or email for the Regional Service Rep. I googled the email address and sent an email. 2 hours later I received back an email stating they want a happy customer and the paint should not be peeling. I replied to the email with all the information they requested, address, VIN, etc, and what outcome would make me happy.
Round 2 coming up!

So far I have received 2 phone calls from the Regional Office and 4 emails from them. I think they will get it fixed for me.

That's awesome news so far. Maybe they will teach the dealership something.

On Friday 7/7 I was told that Customer Service would resolve this problem within 2 business days. Today 7/13 having not heard back from them, I called them. The issue has now moved up to a "Senior" Customer service Rep. I don't care who in GM handles the issue, just tell me straight and not that they don't have the leverage to get things done at their level. If they continue to drag this out I will then ask for an entire paint job of the whole truck. I don't mind the wait, it's being jerked around and letting me think the problem is solved that is making me angry.

Wow, gotta wonder how many other locations are ready to pop off. I did a quick search and GM has some issues with paint falling off late model vehicles. Maybe it's true with all manufacturers.

How about a $100 voucher towards a new Duramax?

It would have to be a $5,000 voucher toward a DMax.

I talked again to another Regional Manager at GM. He doesn't seem as optimistic and the first guy. He asks that I wait until Tuesday for a reply and I will have to take my truck back to the dealer for another look.

I remember years ago when GM had issues with white peeling off. There were a lot of farm pickups that were white with a lot of paint missing. It seems to have been in the mid 90s.

I ironed out a deal with GM. They will pay $195, and I will pay $158 to have my front fender taken off and painted. I was hoping for them to cover it all, but this will do. I'm bringing in the truck on the 24th, and they will have it 3 or 4 days. The patina will be gone for good I hope. They have it documented in their files in case I develop more paint issues.

I took my truck to the dealer this AM. the body guy ran a pen down the fender and peeled off more paint. He said they will know if the rest of the truck needs painting after they are done and peel off the masking paint. He said that will tell if the rest is bad. I told him they should save time and put tape on it now and see if it peels. They will have the truck 3-4 days. I need it back by the end of the week and don't want to be without it for much longer.

If they are taking the fender off to paint it, what are they masking with tape?

As a surprise to me, they are not taking the fender off. They are taking the cheap way out.

Might be best in the long run, I bet it exposes more bad paint by what they are doing.

That's my feeling too. While he was doing a quick over on the truck he paused and looked at the roof right about the windshield. I didn't have on my glasses and couldn't tell if it was dirt, a leaf, or paint peeling. I will take a good look before I leave the dealer. Without my truck, I have been driving my sons 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While it is a very nice small car, I just can't get used to sitting so low to the ground and not have an overview of my surroundings.

Do a tape test.
Randomly stick duct tape and pull off, loose paint will peel.

I picked up the truck Thursday night. They put tape on various parts of the truck and nothing else peeled. They gave me a warranty on the paint. I'm happy, it looks good. Recently installed brakes, shocks, struts, and 4 new Michelins. Looking good. When I brought it in for the paint, a salesman asked if I was interested in selling it to them since it was in good shape and low miles for that year truck [71,000|. Looking at new trucks, it looks like I will own mine for quite a while longer. I'm not putting out $70,000 for  loaded truck.

Well you can get into a 3500 duramax in the 50s, just don't get the High Country.

Talking with the wife and we wouldn't mind going back to vynil seats and rubber floors. I'd just add aftermarket seat heaters for her.

We will be looking to purchase an SUV to replace our 2008 Yukon. My wife wants to wait but the price on a new or slightly new vehicle is only going to go up with time. My daughter turns 17 in September and if things go the way they have in the past, my mother-in-law will put out the bulk of the vehicle. Last time around she paid off the lease on her vehicle and gave my son a 4 year old car with 14,000 miles on it.
My son wants to trade in his 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 39,000 miles for a truck. I think when he gets a job, I would like to get him into a new plain extended cab Colorado.
