Wow, that's a bit embarrassing. Ford will need to increase the metal thickness, material composition, or come from factory with a durable bed coating.

Ford wasted no time in issuing an official statement in response to the video:

Ford wrote:
"When you're the market leader for 39 years, competitors sometimes try to take shots at you with marketing stunts. The fact remains that F-150's high-strength, military grade, aluminum alloy cargo box offers the best combination of strength, durability, corrosion resistance, capability, safety and fuel efficiency ever offered in a pickup. We have built nearly a million new F-150s, and our lead over the competition continues to grow."

That had to leave a mark for Levine to get approval to respond that quick.

I find it funny that GM is so anti aluminum when everyone expects them to follow suite in the next few years.

I'm sure they have used that statement before, people have been hitting at Ford for using aluminum since it was first announced.

I've read that the engineers were sending memos to the marketing group asking if they knew that GM was lining up aluminum suppliers as hard as they can right now.

If it were a truck of mine, I'd be more worried about making bail for kicking the ass of the idiot who dumped blocks in from 4ft. That and just about anyone who is going to use their truck for actual work gets a bedliner these days anyway, truck beds have been paper thin for 20 years now.

I'd have a Rhino Liner or something similar installed before using my $50k+ truck for hauling anything abrasive. And, as Pup said, I'd be kicking the fools ass for dumping it in like that.

At the end of the day, it was a marketing stunt by GM, who will more than likely be using a lot of aluminum in their next gen trucks anyway.

I was surprised how well both beds did with the crazy cinder block drop. On the other hand, that toolbox test leaves a lasting memory.

The toolbox test did hurt my Ford heart just a little. Ford will need to redo the bed and anything else they find to prevent this kind of marketing ability from competitors.

Bed liners are a great point! Maybe come with them from the factory as standard now? Piss off the aftermarket industry.

GM had to go through their own aluminum crap when the Duramax was introduced. The competition had those heads warping and melting based on nothing other than they were the competition.

Here's a couple of torture test videos that Ford put out in the Fall of 2014 showing how strong they think their aluminum beds are. You be the judge.

Again, marketing stunts. Unless they are carried out by an unbiased outside source, do they really have any merit?

I miss the deep voiced Toyota dude and the wild ass marketing stunts they pulled.

I bet that announcer was 4'8" and about 93lbs dripping wet.

How Realistic Is the Chevy Silverado Bed Test?

Chevy vs F150 beds Image13

Quote :
Chevrolet certainly lit off a firestorm of controversy yesterday with its pull-no-punches all-out offensive against the F-150 with a series of demonstrations proving the steel bed floors on the Silverado are tougher and more durable under “real-world” conditions. General Motors claims the testing methodology was consistent and “scientific.” However, were the demonstration tests really indicative of what these trucks deal with in the real world? Obviously, for maximum visual impact, both trucks were tested without a bedliner, which begs the question of how many trucks are sold new with versus without bedliners. Secondly, how realistic is the scenario of dumping paving bricks directly into the bed from a front-loader, rather than being loaded by a forklift on a pallet or sling?

Cara Dickmann, General Manager for DualLiner, said she saw the spots as emphasizing the importance of bedliners for trucks used for work. “Trucks are meant for work. A bedliner is really a necessity for any truck that’s going to be used for work. A lot of the damage shown in those videos could have been prevented or minimized with a product with some resiliency or cushion, which our products have with a rubber mat.” Asked if she thought the spots were a fair comparison of the two trucks, Dickmann said, “As truck owners, we’re all very brand loyal, and of course, some might see the demonstrations as unfair or unrealistic. It’s obviously a little sensationalized. It’s important to note that there was also significant damage to the Silverado bed as well."

Although not pointed out in detail in the Chevy video spots, GM admits in the detailed test results, the bed of the Silverado finally developed a pinhole puncture after multiple toolbox drops. If nothing else, this video is a compelling visual demonstration of why it’s a good idea to get a bedliner, whether of the drop-in plastic variety or a spray-in liner. Truck Trend wants to know: does your truck have a bedliner? Do you have any bed damage horror stories from rough loading? Do you think GM is punching below the belt with this campaign or is all fair in the battle of fullsize trucks?

In the first video it looks like the aluminum bed held up better because it flexed more. In the second video, it had a bed liner.

I'm glad Truck Trend brought up the bed liner issue. The Ford rock test showed how it can stand up to essentially the same abuse x 51 GM did in their commercial but with a bed liner.

I remember the Dmax melted heads. I heard people talking about them but never had any actual examples to back up their claims and now its not even a topic of discussion.

I don't like dumping rock/stone etc in my old truck without some kind of deadener either bed liner or sheet of OSB. The inadvertent sharp edge toolbox or similar is some what concerning.

But I wonder how many demonstrations they did where the results weren't so dramatic? Obviously the tests are done knowing a predetermined end, but so was the editing.

Over the years we put some serious dings, dents and creases in the wheel well of all models back to the R/V series and never pierced the steel. I'd be more concerned about piercing a wheel well than the floor from my experience.

So, the big question is, would the results of the originally posted video sway your decision in buying a truck?

And if so, maybe you need to watch the following video, because this truck outperforms both the Ford and Chevy in this particular test...

Ironic for a unibody but in this case Honda probably owns Ford's "tough" moniker. Maybe there's room for some real world design change in the pickup world.

The Honda was impressive with that "test" but I'd have other worries about it. And I still dont want one.

The concept of the Ridgeline is fine, its just too damned ugly to matter though.

The point of throwing the Ridgeline into this battle, if that's what this is, is simply as ridiculous as anyone dumping cinder blocks into an unlined pickup bed to begin with.

Perhaps Honda is on to something with their bed design. That tool box drop did make an imprison. I don't think anyone is comparing the trucks over all ability. Just bed strength.

I'm sure the composite bed works better but Honda's bed side height looks relatively short.
