"The Utah House has advanced a bill that would eliminate the need for a permit to carry a concealed gun in Utah, as long as it's unloaded.

House lawmakers approved the bill 51-18 Friday morning. It now moves to the Senate for debate.

The bill from Vernal Republican Rep. John Mathis allows anyone 21 or over to carry a hidden gun, provided that the person hasn't been convicted of a crime that bars a person from legally owning a firearm."

I'm all for Concealed Carry by citizens. But I really think if you want to carry, concealed or not, you should be required to take a class. At least then you have a permit that shows you know the safe handling, use, and laws that go with carrying a weapon around town. Instead of the alternative being uninformed, untrained, unprepared John and Jane Doe walking around with a weapon.

I agree, a class for concealed would be a benefit to all. We will never see CCW in NJ, right now we are in the middle of a battle to take away most of our 2A Rights. This afternoon I plan on hitting up the range with the AR 15 while I can still own it legally.

We have had a handgun since before the kids were born, they didn't know until last year we owned 2. My wife was never comfortable with the guns until the kids joined a 4H archery club that evolved into a full shooting club. Now she is an archery instructor, I bought a big heavy safe where firearms are each locked and put in the safe and the ammunition is kept in another safe. It felt good to have protection last year when the hurricane hit and power was out for 7 days. Reports that people were coming up the creeks in boats at night and looting made me glad I could protect the family.

Aside from the "unloaded" part, it sounds good to me. Utah might be included into the short list of states allowing residents to carry a concealed weapon without a permit. I think Arizona, Vermont and Alaska are the other states.

If it's an automatic it should't be too hard, but a revolver would be a PIA in that situation.
