2015 Ford F-150 First Light-Duty Truck with Full LED Headlights

Quote :
LEDs may be all the rage in automotive accent lighting, having effectively supplanted HIDs as "the latest thing" in automotive illumination technology. While LED lighting has become relatively common in driving lights, taillights, and even interior lighting, it has yet to go mass-market on a large scale as the primary headlight light source. It is about to go prime time with the 2015 Ford F-150. In addition to its game-changing aluminum body, the truck will offer optional full LED headlights on higher-level trims.

LED lighting may be considered a fashion item for many premium and luxury models, but the technology has a very practical application and some compelling durability and longevity attributes compared with conventional halogen lighting. The LED headlights for the 2015 F-150 are expected to last five times as long as conventional halogen lights, and in most cases, is expected to last the life of the vehicle. LEDs are also much less susceptible to vibration than conventional filaments, and cast a brighter, more consistent light than halogen bulbs. LEDs are also simpler and more compact than HIDs.

The lenses on the 2015 F-150 are precision machined with 16 optical surfaces and 80 facets, allowing use of just a single LED per lamp for illumination.

I think it's kinda funny that they say they had the freedom to make the assembly smaller and that thing looks huge.

The LED light piping in these new elements looks pretty cool.

All LED's are not equal. The execution of the product can vary widely in its success of intent.

Many people have been installing LED lamps in non-LED designed housings with lack luster results. Looking at the light, looks bright, but isn't casting distance like the OEM designed halogen or HID bulbs and housings.

These are $1200/piece commercial lights for high bay 30-40' applications.
They are bright but not the same wave length.

How many times at the end of the fiscal year have I been hit up with, "Hey I've got money left in my budget I need to spend it so I don't lose budge next year." "Help me find a way to spend it." Integrity takes a back set along with fiduciary scrutiny. This seems to be the mindset of every public department across municipalities small and large, counties, states and federal.

Those lamps are rather large. Wonder what the replacement cost of these is compared to a standard reflector halogen or HID projector setup? Innovation is great. However qualified with cost it might be evaluated differently from those that have to pay for it.
