Review: 2017 Honda Ridgeline Starts at $29,475, Gains Power and Size

Ridgeline: Full Review Image68

Quote :
Can the second generation 2017 Honda Ridgeline take on the midsize pickup truck market? Can it challenge the Nissan Frontier, GMC Canyon, Chevy Colorado and the class leading Toyota Tacoma and grab sizable market share? Time will tell. Without further adieu, we bring you all the specifications and the most thorough first drive review we have ever done.

Honda’s latest pickup will start at $29,475 for a front-wheel-drive RT model before destination charges. It comes with one engine and transmission combination. It’s a 3.5-liter V6 with 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 9-speed automatic is not offered in the Ridgeline, at least not at this time.

The truck has a maximum payload of 1,584 lbs and a max towing capacity of 5,000 lbs (with an AWD model). The payload grows only slightly over the first generation Ridgeline, which was rated at 1,546 lbs. How does it compare to other midsize pickups? The Tacoma Double Cab is rated at 1,405 lbs. The Chevy Colorado Crew Cab is rated at 1,580 lbs of payload.

The Ridgeline also grows in size in every dimension other than track width when compared to the previous generation. It’s longer, taller, and wider. The bed length grows to 64 inches. And the curb weight for the AWD model goes down by around 70 lbs to 4,431 lbs.

The EPA fuel economy ratings are: 19 / 26 / 22 mpg for the FWD model and 18 / 25 / 21 mpg for the AWD model.

The 2017 Ridgeline will come with no fewer than seven trim levels: RT, RTS, Sport, RTL, RTL-T, RTL-E, and Black Edition. The price gradually goes up to $42,870 for the Black Edition.

Does this thing do anything but rob Accord buyers?

Yes, it robs Pilot buyers.

This guy pretty much nails it...

The Ridgeline drives ridiculously well, and I don’t even have to qualify that statement with “for a car that can carry 1,600 pounds.” It’s more comfortable than any mid-sized truck, has more rear-seat space than any mid-sized truck, is more efficient, and can hang with the pack on capability and price.

But the cutesy toys like cargo bed audio and a two-way tailgate are not enough to give this car anything approaching “personality.” It’s almost like the Ridgeline is too good for its own good; any potential characteristic has been ironed out in the name of easy-operation and efficiency.

I really like the concept of the Honda Ridgeline. It’s a valiant effort in bridging the gap between “utility” and “modern-practical” in the vein of the Honda Element, Chevy Avalanche and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but, sort of the Pontiac Aztek. Unfortunately none of those vehicles were much of a commercial success, which brings me to my main concern about the new Ridgeline.

It’s so much like the old Ridgeline. Same exact trifles, same position in the truck market. Honda’s made a great truck for the practical buyer, but I’m afraid that customer might realize they’d be better off with an Accord and the occasional U-Haul rental.

Truck Yeah

It looks like someone stuck an airhose in an Accords ass and pumped it up, then slapped its drawers off.

Entirely soulless and uninspired.

Honda Ridgeline always has been a unique choice for those yearning for a vehicle that fulfills family needs and isn't too big to fit in their garage. Although the new model looks a bit more like a traditional pickup now, it's still more of a sport utility truck than a function-first pickup truck. Giving it the front-end design of the jelly-bean-shaped Pilot won't attract more midsize pickup shoppers, but it is likely to appeal to SUV and crossover buyers who want something different.

The Ridgeline's strength still lies in its carlike ride and handling. And at a time when interest in pickups seems to be growing, offering a newly updated and distinctive choice could be exactly what the midsize segment needs.

Although some will continue to argue that the Ridgeline is not a real pickup, the issue that deserves debate is whether the 2017 Ridgeline's capabilities meet your needs. Our guess is that for customers looking for a moderately sized and priced family truck, this easygoing pickup could be exactly the right fit.
