| Jeep Confirms It Will Make A Four Door Pickup Truck - Quote :
- The “Crew Chief” is one of seven artistic concepts that Jeep presented this month as part of a longstanding Easter tradition. The concepts themselves are not slated for production, but a four-door Wrangler pickup is. And apparently it will steal some features from this crazy truck.
“We’ve hidden some hints about what’s going on behind the scenes, right in front of you,” Jeep Chief Designer Mark Allen told Outside magazine regarding the 2016 Jeep concept fleet.
While Allen dismissed the compact Renegade-based Comanche pickup as pure pipe dream, the elongated Wrangler-based Crew Chief has some elements we should actually see in showrooms. “we’ve never done a crew cab pickup [concept] before. Hint, hint,” he said adding “there may be things you see on the Crew Chief that you might see on that truck.”
Outside found out that the stamped-steel tailgate will not be one of those things, and I don’t think we’ll see the military tires or rear winch as factory options either. But I would bet the general shape, with the six-foot bed and side-step integrated into the cab behind the rear door, will eventually be production pieces.
Don’t hold your breath for the old-school Kaiser-style front end-though. “I don’t have a lot of interest in doing retro,” Allen said to Outside, which I found rather perplexing since “retro” seems pretty baked into the entire aura of Jeep in general. Allen’s response: “The neat thing with Wrangler is that it doesn’t need to be retro, since it’s never gone away.”
Semantics aside, it’s exciting to hear that something so long-awaited by enthusiasts, a Wrangler pickup, is finally coming to fruition. And while nobody should be surprised that they’re planning a four-door, that’s pretty good news too as far as assuring the vehicle’s mass-appeal.
I’m going to be very tempted to waste way too much money on this if it comes out with a decent engine and a bed that can carry a dirt bike or two. If the convertible top stays, I have no idea how I’m going to restrain myself from sprinting to the Jeep store. Truck Yeah | |
