For the last several years, the Nissan Titan has been a virtual non-entity in the fullsize truck segment, soldiering on with a decade-old platform and powertrain, as its other rivals have gone through at least one, and sometimes two, ground-up redesigns. However, things are about to change in a major way with the introduction of the 2016 Nissan Titan. The sheets will finally and officially be pulled off at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but we managed to snag a few shots of a camouflaged test mule running around.

Although there is a strong styling similarity to the current Titan, the grille and nose shows a lot of influence from the NV fullsize vans, with which the new Titan is expected to share a lot of its hardware. However, the six-lug bolt pattern is retained, compared to the fullsize NV’s eight-lug hubs. Unlike the current Titan, which has only been offered with Nissan’s 5.6L Endurance V-8 mated to a five-speed transmission, the new Titan is expected to offer three engine options, the most highly anticipated being the Cummins 5.0L ISV V-8, producing more than 300 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

The other engine options are expected to be an updated 5.6L V-8, possibly with direct injection, and Nissan’s 4.0L V-6 as the base engine. The new transmission is unknown but could be either an in-house seven-speed automatic or a ZF-licensed eight-speed, which is known to have a torque capacity of 738 lb-ft of torque, more than enough for the Cummins’ ample torque output.
