I saw the movie when it first came out, then bought the kindle book. Rented the movie on pay per view the other night and while it is a good movie, I don't see it as the Apocalypse Now of the current mid east wars. The movie stayed true to the book until the very end and the action was non stop, but I don't see a cult following for this movie. Marcus Luttrell is one hell of a man as are the other special forces.

I thought it was a great movie. Few shows get to me, and this one did. Even more so with the recent events of our Traitor in Chief releasing the top 5 Taliban for a fellow traitor.

I bought his second book that tells many stories that happened before and after the mission. He even has an identical brother that is a Seal. I think it was a very good movie, just not one of the top 10 of all times. It's people like Marcus that do things to keep America safe and we never know their brave deeds.
I'm sure over the years I will see the movie another dozen times or so.

The simple fact that this was a true story with the main character actually playing a role in the film made it that much more of a worth-while watch to me. I thought it was pretty damn good and will also see it again a few more times.

Very good movie and does not need to be a top 10.
It wasn't shot with a Hollywood screen play to hype up the action not that it was needed!

I was a little let down when they stayed true to the story right up to the end. There was no fire fight where the Taliban attacked the village and the village was saved by the special forces. I was surprised that Marcus would let them put that part in the movie. I know it makes for a better ending, but truth is truth and that fire fight never happened.

Haven't read the book so give me a spoiler.
Did the Taliban actually find him in the village?
If so the people of the village would/will have a hard time defending themselves from the Taliban I would think.

The village did take him in and did indeed stop the Taliban from taking him away, but there was no gun fire. The village police chief would protect him the time he was there. There were rumors that the Taliban were coming, so in the dark of night a few villagers were taking him to an Army base 2 miles away, but a very difficult trip with the mountains to cross over. At one point the Taliban had spotted them and the police chief made it clear they were in his care and he would not give it up. Within a few more minutes special forces from the Army and IIRC Marines stumbled upon the group and he was rescued. The police chief went to the base with him as he would have been killed if the Taliban found him again. But there was no dramatic fire fight in the village where he had been rescued according to the movie.
Dead on true to the book until that last scene. The bodies were recovered, and it looks like two of them were still alive when caught and shot in the face pretty bad.

Heck the real ending sounds like it would have been just as interesting.

I thought so. He was rescued by Green Berets and Army Ranger IIRC. In his follow up book, he shows a lot of respect for all the other Special Forces and the regular Army units and Marines he was stationed with in Iraq. I'm half way through his second book, a little slow reading at times, but I saving reading it until I fly to Atlanta in a couple of weeks.
