This week we've been taking care of my mother in law. Trying to get her settled now that her spouse died and figure out what to do for her. She has early stage dementia so she's unable to stay home alone for very much longer but the only way she'll go into a facility is kicking and screaming. There's no shortage of things to do. Not a fun spring break.

I do not envy your position.
Could you video her while she has a bout of dementia and show it to her when she is cognizant?

Best of luck.

We're trying paper lists and piles for her to refer to but she still has periods of distress and inconsolability. Add to that she's unable to retain new info, learn or use technology. It's a tough situation.

I buried my father in 2000 after 14 years of Alzheimers, and now my mother is in her fifth year as well. Brutal disease! But I guess they all are. I know exactly what you are dealing with Diseasel. It can be rough. We basically tricked Mom into checking out this retirement home, which was a long- term-care home in fact, and once she was in, she didn't come out. The home says it is a pretty common way to get them in. That may sound ignorant to some, but until you deal with it, you just don't know. We were too late with Dad, and after a violent outburst, he was taken away strapped to a gurney. Not fun.

My mother had Alzheimers for about 12 years, what a way to go! Do yourself and your wife a favor and put in home, it's best for everyone involved. It is tough to do but it takes a lot of stress off of you and puts her where someone can watch her 24/7.

Strong genes this time as her father had Parkinson's and Alzheimers. Unknown to her we've been looking at facilities the last 2 days. My wife is the only nurturing family member so we might need to move her to a facility in AZ.

My mother has passed around 20 years ago. At the time they suspected it skipped a generation and your children would have the gene. I don't know if it's still true, but it gave me a lot of guilt early on that I may have passed the gene on to my kids.

Lie,cheat, steal; but get her to sign everything over to a Living Trust so you can evade, elude and avoid Probate of her will.

There is gobs of help, but you have some serious homework to dig it up.
You'll need to do it because; a) it's available and b) you'll kill your marriage being caretakers.

Israel pharmacopeia has recently developed a pill that reduces symptoms. Push your/her doctor, pharmacist and nutritionist to find it.

Sorry to hear about the bad news. I went through this with my grandparents. They were living at home and forgetting their meds. They were giving their dog eye drops that were expired! I had to take my grandmother into the hospital for exhaustion and dehydration. During that week I scoured the area and found them an assisted living home. She hated it but it was the best thing for them. She was angry but she was healthy enough to be angry.

Thanks, we'll probably be forced to do the same. It's tough love.
