Knee replacement surgery Empty
PostSubject: Knee replacement surgery   Knee replacement surgery EmptyJuly 3rd 2024, 5:22 pm

On June 10th I had a knee replacement in my left knee. Prior, I had 3 surgeries on it but I finally needed the replacement.
I'm walking about 1/2 mile a day and going to PT. Still hurts like crazy and I'm only getting about 4 hours sleep a night. The day of the surgery they had me up and walking by 5 that night.
Every day is better, a good nights sleep would do wonders. I planned to have it done as soon as school got out this summer. I knew going in that it would be a long recovery period.
Mostly bored, daytime tv sucks.

Glad to hear you're doing well. Dealing with much the same myself. Had trouble with my existing right knee replacement and they discovered it was infected. Had another replacement done March 20. Six days in the hospital and then six weeks of  an IV antibiotic which meant twice daily trips to the local hospital plus physical therapy.   Finished that up in May and then started an oral antibiotic which I finally finished up last month. Knee feels good- finally able to do stuff again. I sympathize with the lack of sleep part. Went back to work part time last week. Think some of it is our age- we don't bounce back like we used to. Had my first knee replacement at 47 and was back to work in 3 weeks. Ain't as tough as I used to be. Have a great Fourth of July!!

How did your knee get infected? I have been told that is a possibility.

Could be something from the surgery room or even the hardware itself.
My wife got an infection after back surgery. Around the spine is not where you want an infection. By the time it was diagnosed the bones had fused so they removed the hardware, just in case it was the source. Then it was weeks with an IV pic line and 3 daily doses of vancomycin and Rocephin. By doses I mean units were 1 sized like a lemon and the other 2, large apple that made her mouth taste metallic. Did a number on her veins too, they were so tough it was hard for them to even draw blood. Multiple misses because the veins kept rolling out of the way.

I'm anticipating shoulder surgery later this summer. Just had an MRI arthrogram and waiting on the results. First time for the injected contrast, was different but cool watching the xray during injection.
Had the LH repaired about 3 yrs ago and now the RH.

Good luck with you PT.

Don't really know- they described it as a "chronic infection" and they didn't really know the cause despite all sorts of cultures sent out to a bunch of different labs. The last time my knee was opened up was when I had revision surgery on the knee about 12 years ago. The infectious disease people said it could be from a knick or cut or even a trip to the dentist- I have to take a dose of amoxicillin before every visit. Hope your PT is going well.

Thanks guys. So far PT is going okay. I have good range of motion. Really stiff and painful at night.
