2016 Nissan Titan XD Cummins Gets 17.7 MPG Combined in Real World Testing

17.7 MPG Image45

Quote :
The 2016 Nissan Titan XD is an all-new model in the Japanese automaker's full-size pickup lineup. In our Real MPG testing, the new Titan XD with the available Cummins turbodiesel engine returned 20.8 mpg combined driving. With a gross vehicle weight rating (GVRW) up to 8,500 pounds, the Titan XD earns an exempt status from the EPA for fuel economy ratings. With that said, these numbers should give owners an idea of what kind of mpg numbers they can expect.

The Titan XD has max payload and towing figures of "2,000 and 12,000-plus pounds," respectively, making it a heavy half-ton or a light heavy-duty. In testing the Titan XD Cummins returned 15.8/20.8/17.7 mpg city/highway/combined. The new Titan XD is intended to take a piece of the pickup truck pie between the half-ton full-size pickups (Ford F-150, GM/Ram 1500) and heavy-duty three-quarter ton pickups (Ford F-250 SD, GM/Ram 2500 HD).

Although the Nissan Titan XD has no direct competitor, we can compare its Real MPG numbers to those of the half-ton Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and one-ton Ram 3500HD Cummins. The Titan XD's 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel V-8 is rated 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque. The Ram 1500 pickup's available 3.0-liter EcoDiesel turbodiesel V-6 (240 hp, 420 lb-ft) achieved 18.6/25.8/21.2 mpg with four-wheel drive and a Crew Cab body, while a two-wheel-drive pickup achieved 18.3/27.2/21.6 mpg. In comparison a four-wheel-drive 2014 Ram 3500HD Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab with the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel I-6 (385 hp, 850 lb-ft) achieved 14.1/17.6/15.5 mpg.

Real MPG hasn't tested a Ford F-Series Super Duty with the Powerstroke or a GM Heavy Duty pickup with the Duramax turbodiesel engines.

I don't think those numbers are going to be enough to convert anyone. 17/18 MPG combined in a half ton (or heavy half) is nothing to get excited about. And 12,000 pounds towing is on par for what you can get with other half tons equipped for towing. Then you include the cost for opting for the 5.0 diesel on top of underwhelming fuel economy. It does have a nice payload rating though. But on that note, if you need a truck that can pull 12,000 and haul 2000 pounds, a 250/2500 truck may make more sense. I wanted to like this truck, but it just doesn't seem to add up.

I didn't catch the vehicle configuration. Hopefully it was a 4x4 crew cab.

I wonder if they ever put a 1/2 ton size rear end in it yet.

The Titan with the Cummins utilizes the heavy duty chassis from the NV so I would assume it'll have a heavy duty rear end also.

I was under the impression the Titan XD was or is a close pseudo 3/4 ton, compared to the regular Titan?

17.7 MPG for what it is, isn't bad at all. I would get 16 to 16.5 MPG in my old 2500HD.

I have to agree with Scout, Im underwhelmed. I like the diesel option but why dont they either make a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 or 1 ton and be done with it? Why keep saying the 1/2 ton is basically a 3/4?

Because their 1/2 ton isn't really a 1/2 ton either with that tiny rear end they put in it.

The specialize in tweeners and sell 10's of them.

Nissan is in a tough spot, are they seriously going to go head to head with the domestics? Toyota has validated it's tough to take buyers away from the domestics.

Instead of Nissan trying to wiggle into a crowded a very crowded and very competitive market head to head, offering something different that doesn't directly align to the deemed competitors.

Its not everyone's favorite brand of cereal, though it has the opportunity to be successful in filling a gap between the 1/2 tons, and the over the top rated HD trucks.

It wasn't that long ago that the 300HP/520TQ formula put GM on the map for HD trucks. Time will tell if Nissan will find customers straddling the 1/2 and 3/4 area that are willing to put down the cash.

Objectively the Ram ED gets about 1.5 MPG better overall than the Titan XD, yet the Titan XD has a considerable power advantage and has a significant payload advantage versus the Ram ED.

Iirc it's a Dana 44 rear ... same thing used in Jeep Wranglers but Jeeps generally don't have 317 hp, 385 ft/lbs of torque, weigh 5000 lbs., tow 7000 lbs, or carry 2000 lbs. of payload. imho definitely undersized for the Titan as were the front brakes. They had a recall iirc- the fluid was getting so hot it blistered the paint on the diff. The "fix" was a finned aluminum cover. My old boss had a first year Titan and she loved the truck but it spent a lot of time at the dealer with quality issues. Going to the dealer on a sub zero day with a doggie leash holding the passenger door closed (the power lock had frozen) didn't make her a happy camper that day.

Nissan has stated that they will use an axle from AAM in the new XD. My guess is the 9.5" 14 bolt. Much better than a Dana 44.
