Consumer Reports Reliability Study Has Toyota Near Top

CR's Reliability Study Image87

Quote :
Truckmakers ran the gamut in Consumer Reports latest Reliability Study, from Toyota coming in at the No. 2 spot to Ram nearly coming in last out of 28 automakers. The annual study is drawn from Consumer Reports' substantial subscriber base, reported to include more than 740,000 vehicles.

Among pickup truck manufacturers — most of which offer a full line of SUVs, crossovers and automobiles that also influence standings — here's how they ranked:

 2. Toyota
 8. Honda
15. Nissan
17. Ford
19. GMC
20. Chevrolet
26. Ram

To see this year's full rankings (brands such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Scion, Smart and Tesla are not on the list because of lack of useful data), click here.

FCA, Jeep, and Ram took a beating holding up the 3 bottom slots.

Toyota could release a Fukishima model that melts down into a pile of radioactive slag and it would be rated #1 by CR.

They still need to stick to rating 3 dollar toasters.

The term reliability has been PC'd to death.  When a complaint about an infotainment system is deemed a "reliability" issue, seems disingenuous when considering real reliability issues, like being stranded on the side of the road.  Complaints or issues should be place into a number of categories of like affect, not all encompassed by a single term.  Not all complaints or issues are created equal.

Moreover a manufacturer that has a very simplistic product line, it's much easier to obtain higher reliability ratings than those that produce a variety of models, with greatly differing capabilities and power terrains.   The number of sheer possible builds for the latter is into the millions of combinations.  Thus greatly increases complexity.

It's almost becoming shocking to see all the TSB's and recalls for the Ram 1500. Axles falling off, air bag issues, cylinder head replacements, leaking exhaust systems, electronic dash software updates, diesel emission equipment issues, rear shocks breaking off mounts, battery/ignition line shorts, premature a/c line wear, and seemingly too many ecodiesel engine failures. Even ecodiesel owners are commenting about questionable build quality. Gotta wonder how much FCA has influenced it.

I would imagine they influenced it alot. They just put a lot of money up to buy Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge and the quickest way to make your money back is to start cutting corners.

I have to say I think CR is a joke, but with owning a tundra and owning a Ram the tundra is built better and I have had more issues with the Ram.

I may go back to a tundra next time, they are bulletproof 1/2 tons.
