Fans of diesel trucks hoping that the 2016 Toyota Tacoma might finally be the year one comes are going to be disappointed yet again. This week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit Toyota’s Chief engineer for the Tacoma and Tundra explained in plain English why the company does not plan to offer a Tacoma diesel.
No Diesel 2016 Tacoma At NIAS Automobile’s Mark Nordeloos did the interview that made it all crystal clear. Interviewing Toyota’s Mark Sweers, he asked, “What is Toyota’s stance on diesel engines for the U.S. pickup truck market?” Rather than dodge the question or leave it vague so that Tacoma owners can continue to pine away for a diesel, Sweers said “The difficulty with the diesel is LEV III [emissions standards]. The difficulty is the cost-to-benefit relationship. Everybody loves diesel in trucks. The downside is the after-treatment systems can add $3,000 or more. It starts becoming cost prohibitive, especially in this segment, to pay a premium for both the engine and after-treatment system. That’s the struggle we have. We build a lot of diesel trucks, just not in this country. If I develop a diesel system for our country and I spend a huge amount of money to do that, I won’t see a return on the investment. That’s what we’ve struggled with.”
2016 Toyota Tacoma is All-New Sweers and Nordeloos discussed the diesel topic a bit further, and we encourage our readers to click over and read this great interview. Other great questions include a contrast and comparison overview of the differences between the Tacoma and Hilux. Our favorite part of the interview is at the beginning where Sweers explains just how new this Tacoma is. Many other outlets incorrectly assume that because it looks similar to the outgoing 2015 it is not a full update. As Sweers puts it the only common part shared between the two generations are “Maybe a seatbelt bracket.”
Toyota will surely change there tune when GM is handing them there ass when the diesel Colorado is stealing sales from them .

Toyota owners are extremely loyal. Even more so that domestic owners IMHO. It will take a Star ship Enterprise to move them, even if the competition is marginally better.

Breathing Borla would be the exception I suppose.

While we get this truck, the rest of the world can run down to their local Toyota dealer, and purchase one of these..
The next generation Hilux will be hitting the world markets soon too.
Unlike North America though, the rest of the world will still get a stripped down regular cab work truck, and of course, a diesel option.

Some of us would love a stripped-down, diesel-powered compact pickup. If you wanted to option it up, then give us the ability to do so. Don't bloat it down with $10K in factory installed options that I neither want nor need..

Maybe after the Colorado/Canyon get their Duramax four banger, Toyota will rethink their diesel option. Even if that happens, I doubt they'll offer a stripped down version. Just not enough customers lining up for them... apparently.

Yup, no shit!
You can even get one in a model kit.
Not sure if it's actually a Hilux or not though?

Watch The 2016 Toyota Tacoma Rescue Itself With New 'Crawl Control'
Quote :
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma will still come with rear drum brakes, but its traction control tech has become a lot more advanced. Let’s watch the truck get buried to its axles in sand, and then activate “Crawl Control” and turn its tires into shovels for an easy self-recovery.
Quote :
Here’s another angle, where one of Toyota’s resident off-roaders adds a little explanatory shill:
Quote :
Seems that the wheel sensors detect slippage, being stuck, and can figure out exactly how much power to apply to build up just the right mound of sand to climb free on. Reports say this is one aspect of a Multi-Terrain Control suite, which looks like it goes from “0 to 5” for progressively rougher terrain, rather than just having settings for different surface types a la Land Rover or Jeep.
As for the archaic drum brakes, in the above video Toyota says they’ve been retained for durability.
“The main reason you’d want discs is for heat dissipation in towing. Tacomas don’t do much towing, but they do sand and off-road driving. Having drums prevents your rear brakes from getting screwed up by sand and rocks,” is a paraphrased version of what their spokesman said.
In lieu of the more significant redesign we might have expected, trick tech features like this could be enough to make the 2016 Tacoma significantly more attractive than the rest of the mid-sized pickups out there for off-roading and adventures.
Of course putting those first few scratches on your $40,000 truck will still be mighty painful.

Is that $40,000 American dollars or some kind of different money ? if that's the case Toyota needs to get to work on a cheaper truck .

That's cool. It looks promising but I see a few things that probably stack the demo's chances of success.
First, obviously it's a fake set-up as the truck isn't digging soft sand trenches and piles while it moves forward and buries itself.
And I think getting stuck on an uphill makes it a bit easier to dig out as it puts more pressure at the back tire area where the tire needs to move sand from. Flat land would be more difficult to lift the truck out as the max force would be under the tire where it would be more apt to spin loose and bury itself deeper.
And lastly, maybe it's a coincidence but the sand looked fairly coarse.

I live in sand dune country ours is about 40 miles long , backing down sand when stuck on a hill is easy , that is not really impressive .

Sounds like they did some good work there. Quieter, better fuel economy, more tow/haul capability, and more power. Even better fuel economy and tow/haul vs GM's mid size pickup (non-diesel).
