2014 Ram 1500 Lone Star, 5.7, 8 speed auto, 8.4 uConnect w/9 Alpine amplified speakers/subwoofer, rear view camera, remote start, upgraded gauge package. Full length side steps. Tow Package. Granite Crystal Metallic Clear Coal is what they call Dark Gray these days.

Night and day difference in the 6 speed and this 8 speed.

They made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Both in discounts and for my trade.

It's got the 3.21 in it, but it's far more lively than the 3.55 with the 6-speed. No more dead zone feeling.

and ya the 4.71 in first gear in the ZF helps, LOL.

the trans makes the truck, glad you got one this time. Give it some time to learn and after about 500-1000 miles it will shift just like you like.

stand on it and it rows through the gears FAST and SMOOTH

Another guy was buying a Limited with the Eco Diesel. It was nice. Little bastard doesn't remotely sound like a diesel either.

You can sure feel it dropping into first easing up to a red light. Nice solid downshift.

I took off like I always do leaving the dealer and smoked the tires like I meant to do it. That much of a difference. I'd have to stand on the 6 speed to do the same thing.

I haven't drove one of those yet. They don't have one in the sport model either so I guess I would have to pick something else, but I love the sport model

I need to get it out on the highway. It's rated to get 2mpgs better than my 6 speed did.

I do like the upgraded instrument cluster lots better too. Just a better looking, better functioning layout in every aspect.

It took about 5 seconds to pair my phone up with this one, something has sped that up too. But this 8.4 unit is a bit different from the one I had, this one is NAV ready where my other one wasn't.

what does it look like? I didn't know they changed it from 2013 -2014 or is that only on that model you have

we don't even have that model up here, I think it's a bighorn up here.

That's the cluster I have now, it comes with certain packages. This one came with the Lone Star Premium package on top of the regular Lone Star Package, it is the luxury group, 8.4 upgrade, power seat, fold flat rear storage, rear camera/parking sensors/full length steps, better sunvisors, etc....the regular SLT gauge package is plain and ugly. The Lone Star Premium package is a $610 option. Get the steps with out the package and they are $895 by themselves, the radio another 500, etc...crazy.

Lone Star is the same as Big Horn everywhere else other than TX, but you can get the Big Horn in TX too. Same truck, same options, and priced different. Lone Star has deeper package discounts from what I can tell.

Some dealers ordered the Lone Stars with out the Lone Star Premium package, then ordered the individual packages to load up the truck.

Same exact options, different packages, would have trucks 2 to 2.5k difference in price.

32 gallon tank? LSD?

LSD and regular tank.

Remote start was part of the package too. I shall put that to good use.

ya, love the remote start. mine also controls the cooled and heated seats, steering wheel, climate controls etc. use it all the time

I also really like the keyless enter n go. sweet when your going from site to site all the time or crawling around doing sampling etc like I do. never have to take the key out of the pocket.

Good example of doing your homework and saving some cash.

I drove down to Teague TX on Saturday, did great. About 120 miles interstate driving south of Dallas

Picked up my 5x10 utility trailer to tow back home and I had to keep looking to make sure it was still attached.

It really brings out the best in this truck. Honestly didn't think it would be that much of a difference but it is amazing just how much there is.

To what do you attribute the perceived differences?

Gearing and shift software that keeps it where it needs to be. The old 6 speed, you shifted out of first and the truck fell flat on its ass. This one has taller lower gears that shift through like a swiss watch. Always where it needs to be.

Ran down to Teague and back this weekend. Kept the cruise locked on the speed limit, which hits 75 at the southern Ellis county line. No AC due to the great weather, truck got 24mpg for the round trip. It sits at about 1650rpms at 75.

ZF appears to have the shift calibrations correct.
