Here's How A Ford F-150 EcoBoost Held Up After 200,000 Miles

Quote :
You can still buy a Ford F-150 with a 5.0-liter V8, but the top-shelf engine option is the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost. Yet I still hear stuff like “will that fancy-pants tech really last?” Take this tour of a turbo F-150 with 205,268 miles on it and see for yourself.

Quote :
Truck guys are some of the stubbornest enthusiasts on the road, myself included. We like V8s cause that’s what our daddies had and their daddies before them, okay? And they just sound so good.

When Ford introduced the EcoBoost-powered F-150 in 2011 it was met with a healthy heap of skepticism, mostly surrounding both long-term survivability and exhaust notes. Check any truck forum today and you’ll see that this persists in a decent-sized subset of vocal fans.

Five years later Ford insists everybody loves the EcoBoost and it’s great and wonderful and the best. I have to say, I’ve been impressed with its performance myself and even though the 3.5 EcoBoost is completely redesigned for 2017, there were something like a million trucks made with essentially the same engine we’re seeing in this video.

And what an engine– over 200,000 on the clock and it’s not even leaking!

Our host in the here clip, who appears to be a mechanic regularly employed by this truck’s owner, says this 2011 F-150 is on its original engine, transmission, transfer case, axles and differential. None of which are seeping, he claims.

The only repairs he cites are basic: brake rotors, two spark plug changes, an ignition coil change, a few oxygen sensors and a battery.

The truck’s trip computer claims its made an average 20.2 mpg over its last 3,100 miles, which frankly, is also pretty impressive for a half-ton truck. Those miles don’t appear to be to the mall and back either! The rig apparently does full time duty as a construction worker’s daily driver. But despite a few battle scars and one seriously exhausted driver’s seat, the truck really looks solid. And is that road salt I see on the side?

So the question is– is this a special survivor or are these trucks just that good?

As the mechanic on camera points out, regular maintenance has undoubtedly been a huge factor in this truck’s successful life. It sounds like the owner of this machine has kept up with fluid changes that’s allowed this EcoBoost engine to run strongly under an aggressive duty cycle.

Truck Yeah

He mentioned the "engine" but didn't point out the turbos so I assume they are included in that. That's always been my worry with them since turbos are so expensive to replace.

He did mention everything that was repaired or replaced on the truck, and turbos were not on that list.

The moral to the story is spend more time on the highway and you can get pretty good life out of any vehicle. I recall the ecoboosts have issues with intake valve carbon build up. The most recent design is suppose to address that issue. A garage shop video of an oil change doesn't disprove that problem. No doubt 200k miles is what we would expect if we were driving 40-50k miles per year.

And that last 20.2 mpg over the last 3100 miles sounds pretty good. No doubt he didn't tow a trailer then. As far as I can tell, none of the ecoboosts engines have lived up to the promised fuel economy #'s. It might be one of the reasons Ford is testing a half ton diesel.

When the EB F150 first came out, PUTC did a 2k mile test of two EB F150s. One empty and one pulling a 9k lb trailer. The empty one got within 1 mpg of EPA numbers. My own 1.6L Fusion has met its 36 mpg EPA highway number many many times.

There's plenty of other data to contradict that including Ward's shot across the bow. They called out all ecoboost engines including the 1.5L saying it failed to even get 30mpg in their testing.

Regular maintenance is the key to the longevity of any vehicle.

The EcoBoost I had was flawless. My brothers 2011 has been too. Had an output shaft problem on the transmission that was fixed under warranty but that's it.

Most of us don't drive like testers do. I have almost 80k miles of testing with my Fusion that disagrees with the far less miles of all the other testers combined. Trip to Phoenix and back, 1000 miles, gave me 35. Trip to Grand Canyon and back was also 35. trip on two lane roads at an average of 60 mph gave me 39. I've checked my odometer and all results are based on corrected distance. I have a 1.6L, can't say what a 1.5L would do.

Go tell PUTC that they don't know how to test and everyone else does. seems to me they drove more like a consumer would.

Wifes 2017 Fusion 1.5 averaging 30.2 over the 2200 miles it's been driven. I think It would get 35+ all hwy. Better than the 23-27-34 it's rated for.

I had a rental Fusion a couple years back. Didn't even bother to see what engine was in it until I had it a few days and wanted to see why it drove so good. Was surprised it was the little EcoBoost. I would have never guessed it was, I thought it was a V6 or something.

I told the wife the engine in her car was smaller than the engine in her nieces Harley, she looked at me like I was crazy.
