Midsize extended-cab trucks are typically not the first choice for families with children, but sometimes the smaller-sized pack mules have to play the role of kiddie-hauler. However, until recently, the back seats of many smaller extended-cab trucks didn't meet child seat manufacturers' recommendations that the seat cushion extend to support 80 percent of the base of the child seats. General Motors has come up with a clever, patent-pending solution on the 2015 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado extended-cabs to allow the use of forward-facing child seats to meet the guidelines of the seat manufacturers.

With this solution, the passenger-side rear headrest can be removed and the stanchions inserted into the front of the right rear seat bottom cushion to extend the length of the seat bottom, meeting the recommendation of child seat manufacturers for base support.

In addition to this patent-pending safety solution, the 2015 GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado will also offer six standard airbags, StabiliTrak electronic stability control, standard rear-view camera, and available forward-collision and lane-departure alerts. Both trucks will also offer optional Apple Siri Eyes-Free and Android voice recognition functions. The 2015 Canyon and Colorado are scheduled to start production in fall 2014.
