General Motors Co in 2005 decided not to change an ignition switch eventually linked to the deaths of at least 13 people because it would have added about a dollar to the cost of each car, according to an internal GM document provided to U.S. congressional investigators.

The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce released the documents on Tuesday as lawmakers asked CEO Mary Barra why GM failed to recall 2.6 million cars until more than a decade after it first noticed a switch problem that could cut off engines and disable airbags, power steering and power brakes.

Colorado Congresswoman Diana DeGette cited a 2005 GM document that she said showed a cost of 57 cents per fix.

GM could loose far more because of bad press then they ever would have lost by making things rite. Though the press seems to be going easy on them compared to the mass coverage Toyota got with their issues.

That was my point, toyota got beat up like no tomorrow when even NASA couldn't find a problem, but now a bunch of GM are catching on fire and many people have died and they knew about it, but yet, this is not as a big deal???

anyone want to bet their fine is smaller than the 1.2 toyota got slapped with?

I got a six pack of beer shipped to your door that says is will be

Yep there have been 3 fires in GM trucks and no injuries. Sounds the same as runaway Toyotas.

There you go BB, a link, something you don't have to back up your many deaths claim. At least it's a real link to a legitimate story, unlike what your buddy BPS uses.

Does that German designed transmission in your truck make it 100% US engineered like a Toyota is?

The findings from the House Energy and Commerce Committee emerged as part of a continuing investigation into events surrounding GM's eventual recall of 2.6 million small cars due to the defect, which has been linked to 13 deaths in traffic accidents. The investigators also determined that GM rejected a proposed fix for the problem in 2005 due to both the length of time needed for repair and the costs involved.

I've seen some reports that the number could be in the 100's. Several unexplained crashes with no air-bag deployments. People are looking harder now at past crashes and expect the number of deaths to increase exponentially.

They just keep sinking.

Quote :
GM engineer lied over deadly ignition switch

A Senate panel drilled into General Motors CEO Mary Barra because she hasn't fired anybody yet for concealing a redesign of a faulty ignition switch that's now linked by GM to 13 deaths in 32 crashes in the U.S. and Canada.

Senators pummeled her with accusations that there was an illegal cover-up at GM, that she represents no real change in attitude at the automaker and that, in the words of a frustrated Sen. Barbara Boxer, (D-Calif.), "You don't know anything about anything."

It was Barra's second day of rough handling by Congress. Tuesday she was grilled by House Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee about the same issue – why it took GM so long to recall cars with faulty ignition switches.

RESALE VALUE: Are recalls axing the value of your GM car?

SOCIAL MEDIA: Tweeters shrug at GM CEO Mary Barra's testimony

GM documents first note the switch fault in 2001, then again in 2003 and 2004. A redesign was approved in 2006, but the switch – contrary to GM policy and possibly violating federal law – didn't get a new part number, nor was there a recall then of cars with the troublesome switch.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, (D-Mo.) zeroed in on a court deposition in April 2013 in a case involving a Georgia woman killed in a Chevrolet Cobalt in 2009. In that deposition, GM engineer Ray DeGiorgio told a lawyer he, as switch engineer for the car, had never signed off on changes to the ignition.

But GM documents showed DeGiorgio had himself approved the change in April 2006, McCaskill said.

"I don't see this as anything but criminal," emphasized Sen. Kelly Ayotte, (R-N.H.). who is a former prosecutor.

Is the General Motors Company liable for actions of the now defunct General Motors Corporation? I thought there was something in the 363 asset sale preceding in 2009 that had some time limit of liability clause. Anyone know?

From what I understand the new GM is definitely playing that card. Whether or not the powers that be accept that is another thing. Regardless of who's side anyone is on, this isn't going to be good for the American Auto Industry.

You expected me to stir the pot and I deliver and now you complain. Chill.

You brought up truck fires and claimed they had many deaths. Truth is they haven't and there weren't even many fires. Now you're talking about car deaths which I never questioned.

First you have 1 death in a Toyota and now you're not sure.

Sorry pup, but 300 deaths that haven't been analyzed proves nothing. Frontal airbag doesn't go off in a side impact. Dodge had recalls recently for brake problems on GC and Durango. They all can kill us and have.

To put this in perspective.
On average 30,000 people die from car accidents per year in the US. So for a 10 year period that is over 300,000 people of which 13 are blamed on these ignition cylinders.

Just sayin.....

Plus one of the deaths was from a driver going 69 mph in a residential cul-de-sac w/o seatbelt and B.A.C. of 0.17. That person wasn't concerned about other peoples well being either.

Just like the Ford ignition switch recall that killed 1 person. 51 were killed in Jeeps that caught on fire from poor tank placement, and Fiat refused the recall. Which received more attention?

You are hung up on the brand loyalty thing so hard you assume that I am too.

Just keep your head buried up GM's tailpipe...things will be ok. I promise.
