Nissan Teases Mystery Truck in Instagram

2015 Frontier/Navara Image13

No news has come from Nissan since they unveiled the Cummins Frontier Concept back in February. An update or more likely a complete restyle is way over due for both Nissan's trucks. Whether this truck is an updated Frontier or Titan remains to be seen. Regardless which it is, it's clear it will be getting more contemporary styling cues, along with LED running lights. The unveiling will be a little more than a week from now on June 11th.

The Tease Continues...

2015 Frontier/Navara Image17

Quote :
A few days ago, we showed a sheet-draped tease of a future Nissan truck showing LED driving lights and a roof rack. At first, it wasn't clear whether it was the new Frontier or Titan, but the general consensus was leaning toward the Frontier. The latest YouTube video released by Nissan all but confirms it's the Frontier (or Navara, as it's known globally). How are we so sure? The durability benchmarks for the trucks are given in kilometers, and the temperature readings shown on-screen are in Celsius, meaning this vehicle was primarily developed and tested overseas. The Titan is an almost exclusively North American product, with the United States accounting for the bulk of that market.

Yes, it's true that metric measurements are the effective international scientific and engineering standard. However, if a vehicle is being primarily marketed to an American audience, km/h and degrees Celsius have little to no comprehension to most of the American public.

We're intrigued to see what the differences will be between the North American Frontier and the international Navara. The current-generation Frontier/Navara look almost identical outwardly, but differ in a few key areas. We had a chance to drive a turbodiesel Navara at last year's Nissan 360 event and came away very enthused about the possibility of a turbodiesel in a smaller truck. However, the truck had rear drum brakes and slightly more basic interior trim.

Nissan already has some well-proven diesel engines used in international markets, so it remains to be seen whether the 2.8L Cummins I-4 shown in the Diesel Runner concept will be a North American exclusive or whether it will be offered internationally. Although Cummins is thought of as a quintessentially American company, it has substantial international operations, and its possible a Cummins diesel could also be used in the global Navara.

Here's another couple of shots that appeared online of what is almost certainly the next Generation Nissan Navara, which will possibly look very similar to the next Frontier that we'll get here.

A reader of the Phillippine site Autoindustriya.com sent in what appear to be naked spy photos of the pickup that Nissan recently teased first in photo then in video. The shots, one taken from the front and one from the back, have been found on the Nissan Navara Club Thailand forum. The details in the two photos, one from the front and one from the back, match up with the details we can make out from the teaser video, lending credence to the idea that this is indeed the next Nissan Navara, which is essentially the Frontier in overseas markets. Nissan US has reportedly disavowed this as our next Frontier, though; the mysterious photo on Twitter was put there by Nissan Thailand, supposedly the location of these two trucks.

The only other detail submitted with the images is that there's a 2.5-liter turbodiesel under the hood putting out 187 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque, running through either a seven-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. The reveal is scheduled for June 11, which is when we should know a lot more about the Navara and how much it is or isn't indicative of what we'll get with the next Frontier, a vehicle we're still not expecting for some time.

2015 Nissan Navara NP300 Unveiled

2015 Frontier/Navara Image23

Quote :
With the teases of a new Nissan truck over the past two weeks, speculation was running rampant that it could be the next-generation Frontier midsize truck. That anticipation was stoked by the debut and imminent production of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, as well as Nissan showing us the Frontier Diesel Runner concept. We received a few phone calls from Nashville clarifying the situation emphasizing that the tease was NOT necessarily for the new Frontier but for the global Navara. The current North American-spec Frontier and Navara share a lot of sheetmetal and specs, but there are some significant market-specific differences. So, the 2015 Nissan Navara NP300 gives us a glimpse, if not a wholesale look, at what we can expect for the 2016 Nissan Frontier.

The trucks bring a much more modern look to Nissan's global hauler, with a more pronounced side beltline and a more rounded, stylized front-end. Nissan is claiming a lighter overall curb weight and performance and efficiency improvements. Whereas the mainstay engine of the U.S. Frontier lineup is the VQ-series 4.0L V-6, the bread-and-butter mill for the Navara is a 2.5L turbodiesel I-4. The last-generation Navara offered the 2.5L in two states of tune: 144 hp and 263 lb-ft,,and 174 hp and 297 lb-ft, mated to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic. The 2.5L diesel continues in the new Navara but gets a power bump to 161 hp and 297 lb-ft, and 188 hp and 332 lb-ft. The stick remains a six-speed, but the automatic gets seven ratios for improved responsiveness and fuel economy.

Nissan representatives have told us in no uncertain terms that the company's first priority for the North American market is the next-generation Titan, so the chances a new Frontier will beat a new Titan to the showroom in the U.S. are likely zero. In terms of how much will be shared between the NP300 Navara and the next Frontier is pure speculation. Expect slightly different styling, and considering Nissan's announced collaboration with Cummins on the Titan, as well as the showing of the Diesel Runner concept, there's a very good chance that if the new Frontier is offered with a diesel option, it will be a Cummins instead of the YD25DDTi diesel used in the Navara.

UPDATE: Nissan North America spokesperson Dan Bedore reached out, saying, "The Navara, which is designed for global markets, including Thailand, is not an indication of an impending launch of a new Nissan Frontier for the US market." Bedore added that "we cannot comment on future plans for Frontier," nothing that the midsize truck "is a very important part of the Nissan lineup and of our truck growth strategy for the US." In the meantime, the automaker is "focusing on selling our current Frontier and gearing up for next year's launch of the all-new full-size Nissan Titan."

The American Frontier did, yes. Not sure about the Navara though.
