PostSubject: Wow!   January 23rd 2014, 8:15 pm

Just popped into PUTC forums as I do daily to see if any old members are hanging around. Holy crap did they ever get slammed with spam. The war room alone had over 100 posts! And hundreds of others! That's since yesterday! Damn!

Does anyone over there even realize that forum still exists?

And cars.com is loving those website hit counts.

At some point you'd hope it'd get shut down for neglect and general security risk. Maybe we can turn them in as a site frequented by terrorists. LOL!

There are endless pages of spam. The spambots have taken full control over it now.

I posted this on PUTC's facebook page....

Your Forums at pickuptrucks.com have been completely taken over by spambots. You have endless pages of empty spam posts in every single section. That once great resource is now officially dead due to outright neglect. It is a crying shame that this was allowed to happen in the manner that it did.

I think that's an understatement after having a look/see this a.m. ... don't think there was one legit thread. Really sad to see.

The infiltrators have an automated bot in play

#1 There's a bot signing up for accounts. As there are new accounts being created some as fast as one a second. I spotted three new accounts created in three constitutive seconds.

#2 The number of thread views by anonymous members. These are averaging a few hundred every 10 minutes. These are coming from HTML referrals. The adversary is likely spamming email messages and using PUTC forms to host their spam content Smile Thanks PUTC. Thanks to PUTC for hosting the bandwidth as well. This will only get worse over time if its left unaddressed.

#3 PUTC will likely get black listed before long by several of the security intelligence community, SANS and others. Web content engines/proxies/browsers, DNS records, mail SMTP black lists.

If its this bad on their forms, a conscious person might want to look at the rest of their hosting infrastructure and web facing presence to see if other parts under the code have been compromised in exploited. Just wait til malware and adware starts showing up, if it hasn't already. Hosted by you guessed it PUTC.

Congratulations PUTC.

Hasn't been a post there in a couple days. Looks like the shut-down has begun.

Here's the response you get if you try to post...

More likely the results of Homeland Security as Cars.com seems clueless. Smile

I see they have another blog called KickingTires.com. Their website designs have a traditional DIY appearance.

I was able to post but when I submitted it it was already 3/4 way down the page, that's how fast the spam is being posted.

what a sham, used to be a nice place way back when

I Mod for a different auto forum and the spammers and spam bots only piss-off the members. No one buys the crap they are peddling.  With that said, the only real modding I do there is deleting occasional spam and banning the offenders.

Spammers don't necessarily need you to buy from their ads. All they need is for you to click on their link which gives their site more hits and ultimately makes it worth more to potential advertisers. If you are going to advertise on a website, would you rather pay to advertise on a site that gets 100 hits a day or 10,000 hits a day. I guess the potential advertisers don't realize that a lot of those hits are generated from useless spam.
