New TV?

Was thinking about buying a new television. They say the best time to buy is before the Superbowl. Thinking a bit bigger this time, maybe a 60 or 65."

On the other hand, gotta wonder how long until Ultr HD (4K) designs become more common and cheaper. It would be nice to sit closer to wrapped-around big screen and still not see pixels. Of course 4K programming will be limited for a while.

Staying with any of the name brands, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, and others with their mid to upper model ranges you really can't go wrong.  The next mid step in tech today seems to be the OLED TV's.  Most of which are still pricey.

If it were me I would stick with a mid to high tier 1080P LED or Plasma, find a deal and call it a day.

Right now I have my four to five year old 1080P 60" LG Plasma providing a good amount of noise from the power supply.  I'm going to look into having the power supply replaced, as I just can't justify tossing it out for minimal new features like 3D or internet capability.

Those OLEDs are nice. They say OLEDs likely won't get much cheaper as they're more difficult to manufacture.

Our main tv is going on 7 yrs old. Aside from one bad HDMI port, no problems. It would be nice to have a brighter display and a smart internet connection.  But I can get internet on the tv as is even though it's a clunky interface without a keypad etc.

Apparently Netflix plans to start ultra HD programming in 2014. And Vizio is said to be focusing on ultra HD sets for 2014. Most television manufacturers will be building smaller and cheaper ultra HD sets. Samsung, on the other hand, will focus on bigger and more expensive.

I don't expect UHD to be of any significance until the programming is out in UHD. They can make the sets all they want but unless the shows I want to watch are shown in UH anice expensive to does me no good. I've never understood the hype around the expensive tvs. We finally bought one not bc I had to have a flat screen HD but bc that's all I had to chose from.

From today's news, we can scratch 3D from the wish list, it's all but dead. And ultra HD is on the way.

- Vizio is dropping 3D sets from it's lineup and teaming with Netflix's ultra HD effort.
- Netflix's House of Cards Season 2 will be ultra HD and released Feb 2014.
- Amazon announced this week it will shoot all original series in 4K.

Samsung signed contracts "with Netflix, Comcast, Paramount Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Amazon.com and others (to) bring 4K video to the company’s 2014 line of UHD televisions."

"Additional 4K content partners Samsung announced during a keynote at the 2014 International CES include DirecTV and M-Go, the joint venture of Technicolor and DreamWorks Animation."

And then the gaming industry should be able to quickly support ultra HD.

Yeah. There is no point in buying a 4K TV, when virtually nothing is being broadcast in that format. You can watch a handful of movies in 4K, but that's about it..

Besides, there are already 8K(!) TV's just waiting in the wings. Waiting to make that new ultra-expensive 4K set that you just bought obsolete.. lol

Bottom line, as soon as you buy your TV, it will essentially be obsolete. All these big dollar sets will be a quarter of the price in about a year or so. Best option is to find what's affordable in the size that your looking for, and jump on it, within reason. Keep to the known name brands though. Cheaper is definitely not better.

That might be like saying there's no sense going to a movie theater since there's nothing broadcast in the same quality. Just a few years back many of us had 1080p televisions before there was much HD programming. But we all knew it was coming.

Everyone is different but most prudent large screen television buyers anticipate the future since it's gonna be an expensive marriage for the next 10 years or so.

That's what DW did ... Black Friday. We have a 50" Samsung in the bedroom- it won't fit in the alcove over the fireplace in the living room and she wanted to replace the old 27" CRT set  in the living room. Wally World had a 32" 780p set for $98 on Black Friday ... DW pays and waits- it's "Ship to Store". It shows up late and they must have run out- we ended up with a 39" Emerson LED 1080p set instead ... not top of the line but not too shabby for $98. A h/t to Wally World for making good on it. Still got to set it up and have to call Dish- the receiver is only HD in one room and "standard definition" in the other. Apparently with this receiver you can't have HD in both rooms, not if you want to watch different programs. Any thoughts on this?

I got a 70" Vizio LED from Wally World back in the summer for $1500. Was just at Sams Club last week and they have 80" LED now. And I thought the 70 was big.

More ultra HD programming news. Sony plans to start an internet TV service. The many new online internet service options should make an ultra HD transition more seamless.

I'm just saying to buy the best 1080P screen that you can afford right now, and be happy with it.

4K prices will start dropping in a year or two, and that's when you want to jump on that bandwagon.

  

Polaroid is suppose to be releasing some cheaper 4K TV's.  A 50" 4K for a grand. That ain't too shabby.

No doubt, they'll squeeze the early adopters for now. I'll wait a bit longer for the lower cost retailers like Amazon and Costco to begin carrying them.
