I think we all knew the disaster would turn out to be worse than anyone originally admitted. As they say, it's easier to apologize than ask permission. It shouldn't be long before we learn of effects on the Pacific Ocean, fishing, tourist industries, neighboring countries, ...

Naw, they will hold back that information as well.

The site now has 1000 huge tanks to collect radioactive water and they'll need to keep building more collection capability as they're pumping water in and leaking radioactive water out. Looks like the leaks will continue into the foreseeable future. On top of all that it is a scary terrorist soft target.

Quote :
Last month, Tepco admitted that radioactive groundwater was leaking into the Pacific Ocean from the site, bypassing an underground barrier built to seal in the water.
About 400 tons of groundwater flow into the site each day, and Tepco also pumps large amounts water through the buildings to keep the crippled reactors cool.
The operator has stored hundreds of thousands of tons of the contaminated water in huge tanks at the site. There are now about 1,000 of the containers, 93% of which are already full of radioactive water.

Things are falling apart nicely. At this rate Japan should be exporting their entire society in no time. Maybe we can sell them a chunk of land in Nevada or New Mexico.

Quote :
So, where has this huge amount of highly contaminated water – enough to fill 160 Olympic-size swimming pools – come from? In the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the reactor cores of units 1, 2 and 3 melted through the reactor vessels into the concrete. Nobody knows how far the molten fuel went through the containment – radiation levels in the reactor buildings are lethal, while robots got stuck in the rubble and some never came back out.

The molten fuel still needs to be cooled constantly and the operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), injects about 400 tons of water into the perforated reactor vessels every day. That water washes out radioactive elements and runs straight through into the basements that were flooded during the tsunami. By 2015, over 600,000 tons of highly radioactive liquid are expected to have accumulated in temporary tanks, some underground, many bolted rather than welded together, and none ever conceived to hold this kind of liquid over the long term. The dangerous fluid is pumped around in four kilometer long makeshift tubes, many of them made of vinyl rather than steel, and plagued with numerous leaks in the winter when the above ground lines get hit by frost.
