A buddy and I are looking to do some deer/elk hunting. We've got zero big game hunting experience. We're hoping to purchase something that's lite, not too much kick, good reach, inexpensive and available rounds. There's a lot to consider. Bolt, semi-auto, lever, caliber, and many manufacturers.
What kind of hunting rifle do you prefer?

I have an older Remington 700BDL in 30.06. Accurate, not to heavy and will take down anything on the North America continent with no problem. .06 is readily available everywhere. It's a solid all-around hunting weapon for the beginner on up.
I recommend a bolt action, gonna be rock solid reliable, most likely more accurate and a wide array of choices across different manufactures.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward a 30-06. And it sounds like you can't go wrong with a Remington 700. Reasonable price and reliable.

That's huge! I wouldn't want to shoot that thing unless it was mounted on a vehicle. I bet bullets are pricey.
A gun store guy once told me 50 cal sniper rounds are $7 each.

I bet the second time you fire it you can't help but flinch.

Don't think my shoulder would survive putting too many rounds down range. On the other end of the scale my baby caliber AR fires like a pellet gun, thus keeping my shoulder in tact.
Possibly a step down from the .904, a 20mm shell unknown caliber.

Hmmm, guess I should just get one of each to round out the collection.

Looks like it should be mounted to a track vehicle with considerable armor.
