I'm thinking it's a stretch to order flags at half-staff for an entertainer. Seems to devalue the original intention of honoring someone that dedicated their life working for the public's good.

Is it another sign of a screwed-up society or can we lay it on Christie having a woody for Gandolfini?

Really, flags lowered at half staff for an actor?  Someone tell me this was a mistake.

I know it sounds strange, but we lower the flags for every military, police officer, fire fighter etc... who died in the line of duty. Actors............, I have mixed feelings but they are far a few between so I don't let it bother me. Whitney Houston I did have a problem lowering the flag for a drug addict though.

I see it more on a personal level with entertainers. If you're a fan, know of, or simply respect the individual, then offer your condolences any way you see fit. To each their own. I personally didn't watch Gandolfini's TV series, but know of him from a couple movies he was in. Not enough for me to lower my flag. I'm sure he was a good man though.

As for military, police, fire, etc. It's a definite for me. If they die serving our country or protecting our community,  I have the utmost respect for each and every one of them.
