Today I had an online interview for a tour job based 1 mile outside of Denali. I thought it was a 3 month job as that what was on the website. Before the phone call I was thinking what questions I wanted to ask. If I took the job, I would miss my daughters high school graduation and wouldn't be able to take her to college for the first time. Her choice school is Vanderbilt in TN.
Before we could get into the money part, the interviewer said I fit the job with my past experience but the dates on the website were wrong. It would be April 8 to October mid month. I just cant be away for that long at this time.
For $15 a day, you share a room with someone and get 3 meals at any of the 3 resorts.  The company has a contract with Holland American and Princess Cruise lines.

Wow, that could be a good retirement gig.
Once the kids are in college. I'm sure they have openings every year.

Now is the vanderbuilt extension in Nashville?
If so we'll have to get together, I'm only 1hr from down town.

I don't know where it is. My wife and daughter visited the college while I worked on the house in the summer.

I wonder how long the work day is and how long the work week is. Assuming a cruise ship is outside territorial waters, they probably get to make up their own labor rules. Looks like there are scammers promising jobs only to collect fees. It could be fun as long as you don't get norovirus or get in the middle of a drunken brawl. Maybe they have a gentleman's escort service for those wealthy lonely women. Smile

Work day is 9 - 11 hours. You can be sent to Fairbanks which is an overnight trip. They have drivers that work all 3 shifts, run a 24 hour employee shuttle. 3 months yes, six months no.

They hire a lot of people. I was the first interview. I was told on Tuesday that interviews will last until next Wednesday. That is only for drivers.

I can see if I miss either my daughters high school graduation, or taking her to college but not both. She did an early application for Vanderbilt so I would have to pack my truck and take her. It's a no win situation for me.

That's pretty cool! I am currently looking for a new job. I am considering going on the road, but I don't think my mom could handle it. I went away for a week and by the second day she was asking when I was getting home.

While I was away in Georgia this week, they called my house asking if I was still interested. If they shorten the 6 months down to 3 months I will do it.

No. I won't hear from them. I can take the job the following year if I want. Having time to think about the offer, I really don't want to work 11 hours a day. That won't give me enough time to enjoy the land. I'll find something else. I was offered a job in Ketchikan, but they won't provide housing. I said no to that without hesitation.

We are thinking about an Alaska trip this summer. Maybe a cruise would be the easiest but there seems to be a large number of AK cruise options. I'd guess Glacier bay is a must see. I probably need to consult a travel agent or call Costco's travel online help.

My mother in law made the arrangements through a travel agent and in the end said the travel agent was useless and she could have done it all herself. MIL picked which tours to take. The cruise itself is cheap, IIRC about $700 per person. Then the automatic tip that you have to pay was $16 per person per day. All side trips are an added expense. We did a tour about every other day depending on how long we had to travel to the next port. Depending on the tour, you can be looking at $50-$60 per tour. Our ship went into Glacier Bay and we had a great view. We took a small boat tour into another Glacier and that's when I was glad I dressed warm. Packed shorts, too cold to wear them and it was August. Long pants and a water proof warm hooded rain coat are a must. We saw rain every day except one day out of 9 days. Airfare is expensive so the sooner you book your flight the better. Try for a direct flight is possible. We had direct flights coming and going but my MIL that flew from Florida had stop overs. I would recommend an Alaskan cruise without hesitation. We sailed on the Rotterdam, a little older but still very nice.

Thanks for the info! Our passports are probably expired so we will unfortunately have to bypass cruises with Canadian ports. I guess we would start in Seattle. I'd love to do some fishing but I can only imagine how quick the charter, AK fishing license, gear rental, and taxes add up for the allotted 4 hour outing.

Actually the boat is a little smaller than most we saw in the ports.

I was able to get my passport in two weeks last summer when I found out we were going on the cruise. Depending on when you go, different Salmon seasons open and close. The crazy part about AK is how much the tides rise/fall. Some places we were at, 28' was the normal tide change.

Looks like we will check off the AK bucket list with an AK cruise. We'll finally get to see Ketchikan and some glaciers. We applied for passports and looks like they will arrive in time for a very brief stop in Canada.

We're doing NCL and it's priced like a once in a lifetime event. Their 'discretionary' 20% daily tip based on the crise's full day's price is industry leading. Apparently at the end of the trip you can get in line at onboard customer service to make adjustments but I doubt many ever do. Also the staff expect to be tipped on any service provided in addition to the 20%.

Nothing like an Alaskan Cruise. We really enjoyed it. We went on Holland American, the ship was slightly smaller than other lines I have sailed, but not by much.
During the cruise, my mother in law booked a lot of excursions that at the time I felt like I was on the run from morning till night. Well worth it, looking back I realize how much we actually saw and did.

At first, I was taking pictures of every glacier and iceberg I saw. After being told there are 100,000 glaciers in Alaska I slowed down on the picture taking some.

We visited Ketchikan, Juno, Homer, Skagway among others. At Salmon at least once a day. Bring a warm jacket if you visited a glacier. I ended up buying one on the ship.
Enjoy.

We're back and it was a good trip. Seven days was more than enough for us. It was a big ship (Norwegian Encore) and very smooth even in 9 ft seas. The downside was the elevators weren't very responsive. Almost everywhere we parked the Nieu Amsterdam was already in port. Saw lots of humpbacks, a few minke, and on the last night one pod of orcas.

Next time we might fly into Anchorage and drive around AK.
