GM and Isuzu Dissolve Midsize Pickup Partnership

Quote :
The long-standing midsize pickup truck relationship between GM and Isuzu Motor Co., reaching back to the early 2000s, has now been shut down.

According to Automotive News, GM and Isuzu will no longer produce or develop products together for Asian markets. Responsible for both a Chevrolet Colorado and Trailblazer sold in Southeast Asia and Australia, Isuzu has already announced a new partnership with Mazda to develop and produce a next-generation midsize global pickup for markets outside North America.

For those who remember, GM, GM Brazil and Isuzu developed the previous-gen Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon with mixed results. In the years during its production run from 2004 to 2012, the U.S. economy struggled and final-year sales totaled less than 40,000 for the Colorado and less than 10,000 for the Canyon. The GMT 355 platform (which was also offered for the Hummer H3T) had a reputation for delivering a harsh ride, limited towing and hauling abilities, and housing inefficient inline four- and five-cylinder engines.

Outside the global midsize truck segment, GM and Isuzu will continue to develop and work together in the commercial segment, where GM has already been offering Chevy-badged cab-forward work trucks. And we expect more offerings to come from this partnership as GM has been vocal about growing its presence in the Class 4, 5 and 6 commercial segments.

Actually the 3.5L I5 had 30 more HP than the 3.4L V6 Toyota and better fuel economy. The anemic I4 had almost as much HP as the V6 Toyota.

I drove one and remain completely unimpressed.

Along with everyone else.

Peak numbers and real world performance don't always go hand in hand.
I also know people who bought I-5 Colorados and were unimpressed.

Which one did you drive and were unimpressed with, the Tacoma or Colorado?

How many of those same people drove an I4 Tacoma and came away impressed? How many drove the 3.4L V6 Tacoma and were impressed? It was a dog and got a pass because it was a Toyota. Why the double standard?

Was riding in a new Colorado with the 5 cylinder and got to listen to the owner complain about the power(feeling?) and how he wished he had his ZR2 S-blazer yet (wrecked). Traded it off shortly afterwards on a Silverado since they offered nothing like his ZR2.

Colorado I5 and was unimpressed. Never have driven a Tacoma in those configurations to be unimpressed or give it a pass. Irrelevant anyway, the Colorado I4/I5 sucked and died off, because they were unimpressive.

Toyota has a loyal bunch of groupies that would gladly flintstone them around, regardless of what GM has or doesn't.

So neither of you drove a comparable truck to judge the Colorado against. Good way to be subjective.

I drove an I4 Colorado and no it was not fast, but was adequate for the purpose. Rode in a Tacoma I4 and it was no better.

...feels like the old days in the PUTC war room, LOL

Merry Christmas fellas

an interesting tidbit.  when PUTC tested the new 2016 trucks, the tacoma put down more HP and Torque to the rear wheels than the much higher rated GMC/Chevy

Rear Wheel HP

Chevy  233
GMC    233
Toyota 235

Rear Wheel Torque

Chevy  215
GMC    218
Toyota  220

They were all pretty darn close in all the speed testing

My business partner has a new loaded GMC SLT Canyon, nice rig!!

This isn't the war room guys. Everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter what they are.

The number are all pretty darn close. I guess Toyota has a more efficient power train so less power loss.

https://www.edmunds.com/chevrolet/colorado/2006/review/#overview-pod-anchor

On paper, the 2006 Chevrolet Colorado offers all the necessary ingredients to satisfy the majority of compact pickup buyers. The engines provides both efficiency and power, and with three body styles to choose from in both two- and four-wheel drive, finding a configuration that meets your needs isn't too difficult. The problem is, the Colorado feels cheap, even in a class of vehicles where functionality and value come before upscale accommodations. The doors are lightweight and tinny, and the first thing you'll notice when you slide behind the wheel is how low-grade the dash looks and rough the upholstery feels. Out on the road, neither the four- or five-cylinder engine provides acceleration on par with V6 and V8 engines offered by the Dakota, Frontier and Tacoma. If you're shopping for a small pickup, make sure you explore all the options before settling on the Chevy Colorado.
