Thinking about another desktop computer Empty
PostSubject: Thinking about another desktop computer   Thinking about another desktop computer EmptyApril 29th 2013, 9:39 pm

In the next couple of months I might purchase another desktop PC. I went online to discover a new PC category, the all-in-one. It looks interesting, very compact, big HD screen, and no wires and cables.

CNET says the Dell XPS One is far and away the best Windows 8 all-in-one. It's a touch screen, suppose to be much more responsive vs. the competition. I've heard lots of complaints about Windows 8 but someday one needs to take the leap. I skipped the Windows 7 experiment.

You made a BIG mistake, then! Windows 7 was anything but an experiment. That distinction falls to OS's like ME and Vista.

Windows 7 is considered to be as good as (if not better than) XP and 2000(NT). Users will be hanging on to 7 until the next OS (or two) after the disaster that is Windows 8.

Win 7 is probably the best MS OS to date. One piece systems are not new, some of the oldest computers were one piece. A big drawback can be when the view screen dies it may cost more to repair than it's worth. A component system lets you upgrade to a larger screen at will for reasonable cost.

No, I just didn't need a new computer then. I had the option to upgrade but the windows 7 upgrade tool showed there were no available drivers for devices on my new computer. Probably more accurate to say the upgrade process was a disaster. It was a worthless selling point when I bought the computer.

There are some nice Windows 8 features like quick boot. We might put the 2nd desktop on something like a treadmill so an all-in-one touchscreen might be perfect. I'm just starting the search and not sold on Windows 8 yet.

Good point but I'd be more worried if it were the days of hot running CRT displays. Today it seems the software becomes obsolete well before anything fails.

I probably could go with a local geek shop and have a custom built Windows 7 computer but it might not be as reliable as a factory built.

Reviews say Windows 8 isn't multitasking friendly. That's a negative for me.

I'm thinking about getting an iPad very soon and if that experience goes well i'm hoping my next computer will be an iMac. I've never done the Apple thing so I'm hoping the learning curve is too severe.

I have Windows 8 and Windows 7 machines. No issues with either. Win7 I am running in an enterprise environment. Win8 at home on my security PC that runs my security cameras. Neither are all in ones, but I do have two HP Touchpad tablets. HP is coming out with their new Slate tablet that runs Android at a very reasonable price so I might snag one of those since my 24mo daughter took over one of the Touchpads. They also have some nice all in ones but I just don't need one of those at the moment.
