Best-Selling Pickup Trucks: May 2016

Quote :
Although several automakers had strong Memorial Day weekend sales events, the fact that this May had two fewer selling days when compared with last year seemed to significantly hurt monthly sales totals. Add to that a lackluster economy in many sectors and you begin to see why some analysts are predicting a year-end sales number significantly lower than the strong finish we had in 2015.

Ford was the big pickup truck winner in May as the only full-size truckmaker in the green as dealers try to clear out 2016 Super Duty supplies to make way for the all-new 2017 models set to start shipping by early fall. F-150 production at both plants is at full tilt.

At first glance, GM looks like it took a big hit with the Chevrolet Silverado absorbing a double-digit month-over-month sales drop, but both its midsize players — the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon — held their own, up double digits for the year. The other big midsize winner for May was the aging Nissan Frontier, while the all-new Tacoma struggled.

Expect continued competition through the summer months, as spring thaws and heavy rain damage are likely to stimulate big construction projects in the South and Southwest. We'll have a closer look at midsize, full-size and brand sales breakdowns in a few days.

Sales might be slowing down and Nissan's XD is still waiting for signs of liftoff.

Nissan dealer here has some XDs but what they are missing is a bunch of "Cummins Diesel" banners.

Ram is still sneaking up on Chevy, could get interesting if they increase truck capacity a little more with moving car production out of the USA.

I still haven't seen an XD on the road yet. Really slow launch. You may have hit on something Dan, because the general public has no clue about Nissan utilizing Cummins now. They need to advertise the hell out of that little nugget.

I haven't seen a single XD on the road either and I live in a huge market

I think nissan made a truck to answer the question no one was asking. A truck that is too big and inefficient to be a 1/2 ton, but too weak and small to be a 3/4 ton

it's lost somewhere in the middle.

I said over and over again, that 5.0 cummins that's 900 lbs dry is too big and thirsty to be a 1/2 ton HD truck but not big enough to be a 3/4 ton truck.

I saw one XD on the road here about a month ago. Local Nissan dealers have plenty of XD's on lot here too. Very odd.

Apparently Jeep is doing the heavy lifting for FCA's sales.

May 2016 Pickup Sales Breakdown

Quote :
Some analysts are saying May was not a good month for the auto industry, which was down 6.1 percent overall due in large part to a quirk in the calendar. But if you split cars from pickup trucks, SUVs, vans and crossovers (considered the light-truck segment), the differences are even more pronounced. Passenger cars are down by 16 percent while the light-truck segment is up almost 2.5 percent.

As we've done for the last few months, we've broken down the monthly and year-to-date pickup segment into three charts (see below) to show which manufacturer is winning the growing midsize pickup race and the full-size pickup race; we also compare all the pickup brands. We hope to have more detailed data on the full-size truck sales breakdown for 2015 by July, even though manufacturers do not provide sales data that separates half-ton sales from three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickup sales.
