2017 Ford F-150 Raptor adds SuperCrew

There's no other way to say it: The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor is bitchin'. But an F-150 SVT Raptor with four fullsize doors? Even more so. Meet the new SuperCrew version of Ford's monstrous off-road pickup.

The biggest differences here, of course, are the doors. Ford stretched the Raptor's wheelbase by a full foot, to 145 inches, to accommodate the rear entrances. But just because the Raptor is more family friendly, it doesn't mean it's been somehow softened. All the good bits from the short-wheelbase truck remain.

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 is paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission. You'll get 411 horsepower, 434 pound-feet of torque, and what we're betting will be a frighteningly quick run to 60 miles per hour for a vehicle of this size and weight. Speaking of weight, the aluminum work has trimmed "up to 500 pounds" of body fat from the new Raptor versus its predecessor. Ford has also fitted a six-mode off-road system to help its drivers set the truck up trips off the beaten path, where the new Fox Racing shocks – good for over 11.2 inches of suspension travel in front and a full foot in the rear – and torque-on-demand transfer case come into play.

We'll have much more on the new Raptor SuperCrew when it makes its debut later today at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show.

PRESS RELEASE

Still Unmatched: All-New Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew Is America's Favorite High Performance Off-Road Pickup Truck

• Roomier: All-new Ford F-150 Raptor SuperCrew adds room for passengers and gear, expanding choice and versatility in the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 Raptor ever

• More agile: Enhanced suspension, use of advanced materials, all-new EcoBoost engine technology plus smart engineering saves up to 500 pounds, for improved power-to-weight ratio for even better off-road agility than previous F-150 Raptor

• Unmatched performance: All-new high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost, all-new 10-speed transmission and torque-on-demand transfer case make F-150 Raptor even more powerful, efficient and easy to drive off-road

• Better traction: Segment-exclusive redesigned beadlock-capable wheels help increase grip in low-traction conditions; unique Avalanche Grey color signifies Raptor's Ford Performance tie

DETROIT, Jan. 11, 2016 – Eagerly anticipated and still unmatched by any auto manufacturer, Ford – America's truck leader – introduces the all-new F-150 Raptor SuperCrew, adding agility, versatility and roominess to the toughest, smartest, most capable F-150 Raptor ever.

Developed with the DNA of a Baja race truck, F-150 Raptor is unique among off-road and performance vehicles, with a purpose-built engine, chassis and suspension that enables it to travel fast over challenging desert landscapes or crawl over rocky terrain.

F-150 Raptor SuperCrew with four full-size doors provides rear passengers with more legroom and comfort on the trails and more space to stow gear while exploring the American and Canadian wilderness. SuperCrew's 145-inch wheelbase is 12 inches longer than the standard Raptor SuperCab 133-inch wheelbase.

"F-150 Raptor means superior off-road capability, from rock crawling to sand running," said Dave Pericak, Ford Performance global director. "With the addition of SuperCrew, F-150 Raptor customers can leave the pavement behind – without sacrificing comfort and space."

Advanced materials – including high-strength steel and high-strength, military grade, aluminum alloy – help save up to 500 pounds versus the prior Raptor for improved off-road prowess. Combined with all-new EcoBoost engine technology, the next-generation F-150 Raptor's power-to-weight ratio has been improved, making the truck even more agile off-road.

Toughest F-150 Raptor ever
The all-new F-150 Raptor starts with a purpose-built fully boxed frame – the backbone of the truck – that is the strongest in the F-150 lineup, featuring more high-strength steel than the outgoing Raptor.

F-150 Raptor's chiseled looks are reminiscent of Trophy Trucks – the fastest and most powerful class of off-road pickups. F-150 Raptor is 6 inches wider than standard F-150 for enhanced stability off-road.

The all-new F-150 Raptor also boasts its first-ever dual exhaust and new 17-inch wheels with next-generation BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires designed for off-road performance.

Smartest F-150 Raptor ever
F-150 Raptor is powered by Ford's new, second-generation high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost® engine that produces more power with greater efficiency than the current 6.2-liter V8, which is rated at 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque.

The high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost is a Raptor-exclusive in the F-150 lineup paired with an all-new 10-speed transmission for improved efficiency.

An all-new four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand transfer case, with advanced, easy-to-use off-road mode driver-assist technology, further improves Raptor's performance so it is easy to drive off-road across varying terrain.

F-150 Raptor's new transfer case, which manages power distribution between the front and rear wheels, combines the best attributes of clutch-driven, on-demand all-wheel drive with durable, mechanical-locking four-wheel drive to send power to the wheels in slippery conditions.

F-150 Raptor's pioneering off-road driving mode technology has evolved into an all-new Terrain Management System™ that enables the driver to select modes to optimize driving dynamics to environmental conditions – from snow to mud, sand and more.

Six preset modes help the truck power through different terrain and driving conditions:
• Normal mode for everyday driving
• Street mode for higher-performance, on-road driving
• Weather mode for rain, snow or ice
• Mud and sand mode for muddy and sandy trails and terrain
• Baja mode for high-speed desert running and
• Rock mode for low-speed rock crawling

Most capable F-150 Raptor ever
An available Torsen front differential increases off-road capability further. The system increases grip significantly for the front end of the truck and allows it to pull itself over obstacles and up steep grades – even when traction is split between the front tires.

F-150 Raptor comes standard with new FOX Racing Shox with custom internal bypass technology that works to damp and stiffen suspension travel over rough terrain, helping prevent the truck from bottoming out.

Front and rear shock canisters have grown from 2.5 inches to 3 inches in diameter for improved performance. They feature more suspension travel than the current Raptor's 11.2 inches at the front and 12 inches at the rear.

All-new F-150 Raptor will be built at Dearborn Truck Plant and goes on sale in the U.S. and Canada this fall.

I see them all the time here. Saw one with a flat bed and a hay spike on the back.

Video looks like fun!

No amount of Z71 stickers will make a GM truck soak up the rough stuff like that.

Use the Raptor like in that video, get your warranty voided when your frame bends.

There was only one dune jump that I would be weary of in that video.

Most other stuff should not be an issue. Long travel suspension and GOOD shocks go a long ways. Years back my '98 Dodge Cummins QC/SB had 10" travel Bilstein 7100 shocks and progressive rate 2.5" front coils and it would rock on stuff like that. Used all 10" of travel on the front shocks.

Ford deserves credit for putting in the extra effort and redesigning the front suspension with longer A-arms to allow for a longer travel IFS system. There are so many anti-Ford people out there that think the Raptor is a shock, tire and sticker package.

Our son has a 1997 CTD RC/LB and we installed a Carli suspension kit and it is fun as all hell on the sand dunes. There was a 1/2 Chevy that went with them, 08ish with mild lift, and broke a front CV both times. Broke the inner tri-pot housing from too much angle would be my guess.

The original Raptor had a hole in the frame where it was bending. I wonder if the '17 Raptors frame still has that hole in it?

The 2017 Ford Raptor is Ready For Any Terrain

'17 RAPTOR Image44

Quote :
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor is looking more and more like it’s going to be one of the most badass trucks to ever leave the Ford factory, and after watching the new Raptor test out its six terrain modes, it’s hard to argue with that. For 2017, the aluminum-bodied F-150 Raptor powered by a 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 will feature six terrain modes designed to keep you moving no matter where you might find yourself. With terrain modes for everyday driving, weather, mud/sand, rockcrawling, sport mode, and everyone’s favorite, Baja, the 2017 Raptor is sure to be a blast whether you’re driving to work or ripping up the dunes.

In Normal driving mode, the Raptor should provide plenty of power and fun to handle the chore of cruising comfortably everyday. When you feel like opening up the throttle and carving the windy roads like sports car, the Sport Mode offers a sportier feel and will have you whipping around those slow Prius drivers with ease. For those that spend a portion of their year driving or wheeling in wet or snowy conditions, the Weather Mode engages four-wheel drive and adjusts AdvanceTrac, throttle response, and shift points for improved traction in sloppy conditions.

When it comes to taking the Raptor to its natural habitat, the dirt, the terrain modes have that covered too. The Mud/Sand Mode is perfect for wheeling trails. With 4-Hi engaged, the differential locked, and the steering adjusted, navigating trails should be a breeze. When the trail gets tight and technical, the Rock Crawl Mode has you covered and is designed for slow-speed wheeling, 4-Lo is engaged, the differential is locked, AdvanceTrac can be turned completely off and the front camera turns on to see the rocks you wouldn’t otherwise be able to see.

Our favorite mode the previous-generation Raptor offered was Baja Mode, and the 2017 model will have the same awesome terrain mode. While in Baja mode, the Raptor truly shines and 4-Hi is engaged, AdvanceTrac is nearly off, throttle mapping is improved, and the transmission has quicker more aggressive shifts keeping the Raptor in the performance powerband.

We haven’t had the opportunity to drive the 2017 Raptor yet, but if it’s better than the previous generation, it’s going to be pretty awesome. Check out the video of the Raptor testing out all the terrain modes, but grab a napkin first to wipe up all the drool.
