Best Selling Pickup Trucks: June 2015

Quote :
With half of the year behind us, the auto industry is on a record pace to break the 17-million-unit mark by year-end, and much of that success sits squarely on the backs of pickup truck makers. Breaking 17 million units in auto sales has happened only three times, most recently in 2001.

According to Automotive News, some U.S. dealerships are offering extended financing packages and huge discounts on half-ton and heavy-duty pickups. In some cases there are more than $10,000 in discounts on specific vehicle configurations and trim packages; the 2015 Ford F-150 is one example. Because Ford offers so many different build configurations and is experiencing some frame supplier issues, it's likely to take some time for the truckmaker to build up a proper supply of the more popular features and packages (like the larger fuel tank, HD tow package and unique color combinations). That's causing some orders to take longer than anticipated to fill.

The big winners for June are the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra; they both reached double-digit sales increases when compared to June 2014 sales. In fact, when combined, GM's year-to-date sales are significantly more than the Ford's total sales for the year so far, and that doesn't include the midsize Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon (which seem headed to reach a combined 100,000 in sales by year-end).

When looking at the GM midsize twins, it doesn't appear that they're taking sales away from their bigger brothers, the Silverado and Sierra. An objective look at the numbers seems to imply the Colorado and Canyon are taking a bite out of the No. 2 midsize player, the Nissan Frontier, and possibly from the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. We'll be taking a deeper look into the numbers at a later date to see what's really happening — the results should be interesting.

Finally, it's worth noting that Toyota continues to experience strong sales with combined Tacoma and Tundra numbers headed to their largest total since the San Antonio pickup production facility opened in 2006. Of note: The Tacoma's monthly and year-to-date sales lead the pickup segment on a percentage-of-change basis. Interestingly, Titan sales for June are up as dealers try to make room for the next-generation Titan slated to go on sale near the end of the year. Look for a PUTC analysis of midyear sales data to come shortly.

Ford sold 61,870 F-Series units in May 2015 and 55,171 units this month.  That's a 11% drop month to month.

Mark Fields last month blamed constraints on frames for the lack of sales and inventory limiting certain trim availability.  He also stated that May should be the low point, building inventory and volume throughout the year.  This appears now to not be true.   Automotive News confirms quite a liberal use of incentives on F-Series that are available.  While two to three months doesn't make a trend, it's going to become increasing difficult to represent this as an inventory issue in the coming months.

Comparatively the Silverado Sierra were flat and the Colorado/Canyon were down 20%+ month over month. GM is still claiming the Colorado/Canyon has a 15 day turn rate. They may in fact have a strong sales, low inventory issue that they haven't been able to get on top of. This remains to be seen.

From metrics from around the industry, GM cars took a beating as well as full size SUV's.  Allegedly Ford cars got hit hard as well.

GMs full size truck sales are picking up the pace big time! Won't be long at this pace and the Silverado will surpass Ford without its twins help. Is Fords issue its extensive use of aluminum or its lack of V8 options in its half tons? Or both? Time will tell.

The new F150 is just too damned ugly. To me, that's the overriding reason. The nose of the new F150 is an outright abortion.

June's Fastest and Slowest Selling Pickups

Quote :
Pickup trucks continue to act as the prime motor in the overall auto industry sales, with 10 of the fastest-selling pickups moving off lots in 30 days or less. The major players continue to be the hot-selling Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, but we can't ignore how well both of Toyota's pickups are doing. Additionally, as Ford continues to produce new F-150s, both regular- and crew-cab models are selling quickly.

Finally, it's worth noting that the only heavy-duty truck on the fastest-selling list is the GMC Sierra 2500 Denali crew cab, which continues to be one of the most popular fully loaded trim packages in the industry. Likewise, the Chevy Silverado 1500 crew cab is the only half-ton pickup on our slowest-selling list, sitting on lots almost three times as long as the No. 10 hot seller.

As we've noted before, this is a snapshot of how well different pickups are doing in the marketplace based on how long a particular configuration remains on a dealer lot (on average) when we look at a cross-section of U.S. dealer sales data. The vehicles we've include on the fastest-selling list must meet a minimum sales threshold in order to eliminate small-volume or special-package configurations. We do not have a sales threshold for our slowest-selling list.

Would be interesting to compare the total inventory of the F-150 and total inventory of the Colorado/Canyon, compared with the turn rates indicated above to detail inventory constraints.

Check out the refreshed 8 year old Tundra, better turn rate than the new F-150.

Stepping back, it seems there's been an uptick in the market for trucks, seeing as cars have been getting punished.

Looks like someone is out to lunch over at Cars.com/PickupTrucks.com? Looking at number 8 and 10 positions for fasting selling, the Tundra Crewmax is their crew cab. So what is it? 8th or 10th?

I'm going to assume they are referring to the extended cab as the crew cab in 10th.

But yes, The F-150 is definitely falling short of expectations so far. I wonder what Fords next play will be if sales keep falling?

Yep the CrewMax is the big cab second row, the extended cab is officially the "double cab" in Toyota nomenclature. PUTC just making it up as they go. Smile

In today's mail I got a $750 "private offer". Private to whom? What makes this private? Does the NSA know? Anyway on the new, inventory constraint F-150.
