| Volkswagen Tristar Concept Unveiled at IAA Commercial Show Concept Commemorates 30th Anniversary of Syncro All-Wheel Drive - Quote :
- Aside from the Amarok, Volkswagen may not be the first name that springs to mind when you think of pickups, but the company has been making truck-like vehicles for decades, with pickup variants of the Transporter or Microbus hauling stuff around since the 1960s. It may have its engine in the “wrong” end and be cooled by water instead of air, but we still think the Volkswagen Tristar concept is a faithful modern-day interpretation of VW’s line of microbus-based pickups.
The interior dashboard is low, flat, and wide, designed to resemble the dashboard style of the earlier rear-engined Transporter models. However, there’s nothing old-fashioned about the technology employed on the concept, with the centerpiece being a 20-inch swing-out touchscreen tablet table to accommodate the needs of contemporary commercial use. The driver seat pivots and swings to face the passenger, making for a mobile office. Probably not destined for the production line is the concept’s built-in espresso maker.
Based on VW’s T5 Transporter, the successor to the model last sold in the U.S. as the EuroVan, the Tristar features all-wheel-drive with a locking rear differential, 1.2 inches of additional ground clearance, and a 200hp, 332–lb-ft 2.0L TDI I-4 diesel engine mated to a seven-speed DSG double-clutch transmission.
